Two and a half years ago, I'm driving a car that is not mine on the way to Kearney High School. Not a whole lot is being said, but Samantha Fish is blaring through the speakers.  I kept thinking to myself, "This will be an interesting football game to call, we can't even carry on a conversation." I was driving Denny's car to Kearney High School to call my first ever athletic event with Denny. Denny told me I could drive because he had been up since 4:00 in the morning and he wanted to relax.  I was to drive and not touch the radio in his car.  This is when I came to the conclusion: Denny Perkins hates me.

Maybe he felt bad for me, but after I asked him multiple questions about the radio business and about sports broadcasting, Denny came around and not only became a great mentor, but someone I could talk to about life in general. I don't want to overshadow his goodbye with my farewell message, I just thought it was necessary for me to express my gratitude for what he has done for me.

I have learned a lot about sports broadcasting from Denny, whether it was from doing color commentary with him, running the board during SFCC basketball games or just sitting by him and watching a game on television.  Just like many others, he has opened up my ears to a genre of music that I really never paid much attention to. He took me to multiple blues shows and always had a new artists or band that he recommended me to listen to.

Many of you have known Denny for much longer than I have.  I would say I have been fortunate to get to know him over the three years that I have.  He will most likely call me soft for writing this, but that's a price I am willing to pay.

So, here's to Denny Perkins! The man who has helped bring some of the greatest blues acts right here to Sedalia, the man who is up before you and cracking the mic in the morning, and the man who called all the nail biters throughout the years. Good luck in the future and thanks for all you have done!

See...I didn't even mention how I spanked you in the bracket challenge!
