5 Myths You Think are True About Missouri Goodwill, But Aren’t

It's been said that perception is reality. Unfortunately, when it comes to perceptions that aren't true, it can hurt organizations that are trying to help the community. There really are many myths that people think are true about Missouri Goodwill locations, but they aren't.

This is one case where I chose not to trust any third-party sites when fact-finding about Goodwill locations in Missouri. I relied solely on the official FAQ page for the Goodwill site for Missouri and Kansas stores. They address a number of misconceptions and in some cases misunderstandings about what they do and don't do.

FALSE - The Goodwill FAQ page says this rumor started in 2005, but they are a 501-C-3 not-for-profit and their financials are disclosed publicly. No employee for Goodwill at any level makes millions of dollars.

FALSE - While they assess items for functionality and cleanliness, they do not clean or repair items according to the Missouri Goodwill FAQ page.

FALSE - The Missouri Goodwill site says that there are some items held in back rooms or the managers office like antiques and collectibles, but they are only held there for sale through the online store.

FALSE - While most Missouri locations are open until 8pm, they ask that items NOT be left outside the stores unattended after hours.

FALSE - Missouri Goodwill locations don't accept everything. You can view the items they accept on their online site.

It's important to emphasize that while there are general policies for Missouri Goodwill locations like the ones shared above, each location may have specific differences. When in doubt, contact your local Missouri Goodwill directly.
