Popular Furniture Giant At Home Goes Bankrupt—Closures Begin in Illinois
Another one bites the dust. Yet another popular retail chain has filed for bankruptcy and announced the closure of 26 stores, for now, including two in Illinois.
Major Home Goods Store to Close 2 Locations in Illinois
It hasn’t been a good year for retail closures. JoAnn Fabrics, Big Lots, CVS, and others have either shut down entirely or scaled back locations that are underperforming. And now, you can officially add At Home to that growing list.

According to USA Today, the home goods retailer has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will close 26 stores across the U.S. Most of the closures are occurring in California and New York, but two stores in Illinois are also shutting down, Peoria and Crestwood. Both locations will be closed by September 30th.
The Reason for Bankruptcy
It looks like the growing costs of furniture, home décor, and the ongoing pressure of "persistent inflation" are the main reasons the company pulled back from Texas and ultimately chose to declare bankruptcy. With rising expenses and fewer consumers spending money in their stores, this could be the beginning of the end for At Home.

As of right now, there are no Missouri locations on the list of closures and just two in Illinois. But as we all know, these things tend to grow and expand, so it wouldn’t be surprising if more closures are announced in the coming months.
