You might find yourself attending a holiday party, or even hosting one, and if so, there’s one drink you may want to consider adding to your menu or seasonal sipping list.

What the Study Says About Holiday Drinks

A new study has revealed each state’s favorite holiday drink, and while hot chocolate tops the list in 13 of the 50 states, it’s surprisingly not the go-to choice for Missouri. Instead, the Show-Me State’s favorite holiday drink is the Amaretto Sour.

Is that really a “holiday drink”? That’s up for debate. According to Food & Wine, the Amaretto Sour has been named Missouri’s top holiday drink for 2025. While it’s a classic cocktail with a loyal following, it doesn’t exactly scream holiday cheer.

Is the Amaretto Sour Really a Holiday Drink?

You might expect something a little more festive, like warm apple cider, mulled wine, or even a rich cup of hot chocolate, but nope. Missouri is apparently reaching for the Amaretto Sour.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy an Amaretto Sour as much as the next person. It’s sweet, smooth, and easy to drink. That said, if I’m hosting a holiday party or attending one, it’s not my first choice for a seasonal cocktail. When I think of holiday drinks, I think of warm, cozy, and comforting ones.

What makes this choice even more confusing is that the study also notes most Midwesterners prefer hot drinks during the colder months. That makes Missouri’s pick feel a little out of place. Still, whether you agree or not, the Amaretto Sour has officially earned its spot as Missouri’s holiday drink, unexpected but interesting nonetheless.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
