If you are the type of person who likes to be where other people aren't, there are many destinations in Missouri that can deliver you that isolated experience.

I will confess that I am an extreme introvert which is odd considering what a public career I've had for nearly 43 years. When I'm not working, I seek silence and alone time. That's why I feel like Missouri was a state that was perfect for my birth state. Because of the many heavily-forested areas that are far from civilization, there are many destinations far away from the crowds. Here are 5 favorites:

There are several things to note about these Missouri escape destinations. First, you need to be aware that all of them are now in bear country. The black bear population in Missouri has been growing every year and the Department of Conservation estimates that there are more than 1,000 now. Second, all of these places have venomous snakes including Copperheads and rattlesnakes. This is complicated by the fact that all are remote (which is kind of the point), but that remoteness means lack of connectivity to cell networks in some cases where you would have difficulty getting emergency help if you needed it. All that being said, all of these 5 places are among the most beautiful parts of Missouri. If you want to get away from everything and everyone, you can't do better than these in the state.
