Missouri Man Sees Mysterious Albino Deer in Woods
You never know what you might see in the rural parts of Missouri. One man in Crawford County can attest to that as he's just shared a picture of something odd he noticed hiding behind a tree. It was a rare albino deer.
According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, Michael Smallwood shared this picture with them of a rare albino deer spotted wandering on a Crawford County property. Michael is an agent for the Missouri Department of Conservation.
How rare are albino deer in Missouri?
According to Protect the White Deer, the odds of a deer being born albino are 1 out of every 20,000. That's for all of America. If you break it down to just Missouri, the odds go even higher. They do say others estimate the odds closer to 1 in every 30,000. The bottom line is you will rarely if ever see a deer like this in Missouri or anywhere else for that matter.
Why are some deer born albino?
Albinism is a recessive gene that many animals have, but few ever display. The animal must have the gene from both a mother and a father and even then the deer might not be born albino. It's very spontaneous and some experts still scratch their heads over why it happens for some animals, but not others. For sure, the timid white deer spotted in Crawford County, Missouri is a rare one. Very cool that the Missouri Department of Conservation agent was quick enough to capture a quick pic before it disappeared into the woods.
