Illinois Place Susceptible to Landslides is Full of Outlaw Caves
Sometimes the most interesting thing is right underneath your feet. That could be said of the Illinois place most susceptible to landslides that is known for its many outlaw caves.
There is a recent study that was just shared by Stacker of the places in Illinois that are most susceptible to landslides. Number one on their list is Hardin County, Illinois where 74.2% of the land in that part of the state is susceptible to landslides. If you're familiar with that part of Illinois, you know that Hardin County is also the home of Cave-In Rock which is a cave system where the notorious Harpe Brothers gang stayed.
That specific gang became known as America's first serial killers according to Wikipedia. They are believed to have killed as many as 50 and did not take lives for financial gain, but just because they enjoyed it allegedly.
It is believed that this notorious gang spent 1799 in this southern Illinois cave where they would push victims from the top of the cliffs above the caves to their death below and that sadly included many children and even babies.
That's one reason why the caves in this extreme southern part of Illinois are associated with tragedy. It's the one place in Illinois most likely to have the land collapse under your feet.
