Explosive Diarrhea Cases Surge in Missouri, Officials Warn

There's a new bulletin from Missouri health officials as they're seeing a huge spike from a parasitic infection that's causing explosive diarrhea cases across the state.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has published new numbers from cases deriving from Cyclospora which causes a severe intestinal illness in those it infects. Here are their exact words from the bulletin just shared yesterday:

"The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) is receiving a substantial increase in reports of Missourians testing positive for Cyclospora.  Over 80 positive laboratory reports have been received by DHSS through routine disease reporting during the week of July 7 – July 14, 2026."

Keep in mind that's just over the past week. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says they're investigating along with local health agencies.

What are the symptoms of Cyclospora?

• Watery Diarrhea described as explosive by those who suffer from it
• Severe stomach cramps, bloating, and increased gas
• Fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, and muscle aches

How can you get infected by this parasite?

I have seen outbreaks of this bug connected to fresh, raw produce like bagged salads, cilantro, basil, snow peas, and raspberries. I have not seen a product pinpointed to this current outbreak, but officials advise that you choose whole produce and wash all food thoroughly. If you can avoid untreated water, that will also give you a better chance to avoid this very nasty bug.
