Soccer Roadrunners Earn Second Consecutive Victory

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners soccer team earned a hard-fought comeback victory over Iowa Central Community College 3-1 at the Smith-Cotton Soccer Field on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Iowa Central scored the opening goal of the game with about 24 minutes remaining in the first half. Iowa Central took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

The Roadrunners (2-1) leveled the contest when freshman Vijay Valcin made a strong run to draw a foul inside the 18 yard box and earned SFCC a penalty kick.

Freshman Raheem Raeburn stepped up to take the penalty and beat the goalkeeper.
Valcin scored what proved to be the game-winning goal when he beat the goalkeeper off of a counterattack courtesy of a pass from Raeburn with less than 12 minutes remaining in the match. Valcin put the match away with another goal with less than six minutes to go.

"I just had to follow the instructions of my coach," said Valcin. "He tells us to hustle for everything. I just listened and I executed. We started off the game a little shaky, but we are growing as a team and just getting familiar with everyone. In the second half, coach laid out the instructions, and we went out and got the victory."

Freshman goalkeeper Victor Soares got the start and played the first half in goal for SFCC. Freshman goalkeeper Rondell Nelson played the second half for SFCC.

"The guys dug deep," said Roadrunners Head Coach Michael Poropat. "They got a result that I think was earned, and well-deserved. This is the first time since I've been here that we have been above the .500 mark. We are still getting better. I think there are more levels that we can go to and I'm really eager to see what we look like in October."
