The first annual Sedalia Area Chamber of Commerce Hot Air Balloon and Kite Festival is tomorrow and Saturday at the Missouri State Fair Campgrounds.

Admission is free. Parking can be accessed by taking the road behind SFCC off Clarendon Road.

The event is sponsored by Nucor, and begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday with opening ceremonies.

At 9 a.m., Great American Kites will go up. These are large, unique specialty kites that get your attention. Sean Beaver is in charge of this portion of the festival, which will delight adults and children alike.

At 9:30 a.m., it's Yoga time with Sue Guffin.

From 10 a.m., to 7 p.m. there will be activities for kids in the Kid Zone (see map) both days. In addition, pony rides will be offered for $5 each from 9 a.m., to 8 p.m. at the Petting Zoo.

Food trucks will be on site from 10:30 a.m., to 9 p.m.

Other vendors will be on the campgrounds from 1 to 8 p.m.

At 3 p.m., there will be a demonstration by the Civil Air Patrol.

At 5 p.m., the top 20 participants in Sedalia's Got Talent will compete and be narrowed down to five.

At 7 p.m., tethered hot air balloon rides will be offered for $20 each.

And from 7:30 to 9 p.m., there will be a hot air balloon glow.

On Saturday, a hot air balloon launch will take place at 6:30 a.m.

At 8:30 a.m., will be opening ceremonies and the playing of the National Anthem.

At 9 a.m., Great American Kites will go up.

Food trucks and several other vendors will be open from 9 a.m., to 9 p.m. Saturday.

At 9:30 is Yoga with Sue Guffin.

Encounter Church will hold a service at 10 a.m.

At 11 a.m, the Baile Folklorico Dancers will take the stage and perform.

At 1 p.m., Gerry Tritz the Magician will amaze and delight the crowd.

Studio A and Dance With Grace will be on stage at 2 p.m.

At 3 p.m. there will be a Smith-Cotton Robotics demonstration, as well as a demonstration from the JROTC Drill Team.

4 p.m., the top five competitors will compete for the top spot in Sedalia's Got Talent.

At 7 p.m. tethered hot air balloon rides will be offered for $20 each.

And from 7:30 to 9 p.m., there will be a hot air balloon glow.

Official Sedalia Hot Air Balloon merchandise will be for sale at the merch booth.

Sedalia Police, Sedalia Fire and PCAD will be on site as well.

Gary Whitby of Columbia, a pilot for 28 years, is the “balloon-meister” for this event, and has participated in well over 200 hot air balloon festivals in the US and Mexico since 1998.
