The State Fair Community College Music Arts program will present instrumental and vocal concerts on separate nights.

The Jazz and Concert bands will perform at 7 p.m. March 14. The Contemporary and Chamber Choirs will perform at 7 p.m. March 16 and will feature a performance by the Smith-Cotton High School (SCHS) Concert Chorale. Both events will take place in Stauffacher Theatre on the Sedalia campus. Admission to both concerts is free on a first come, first served basis.

SFCC instructor Joe Schreimann will direct the Jazz and Concert bands on March 14. The Jazz Band performance will feature four selections that include recognizable classics such as “St. Thomas” written by saxophonist Sonny Rollins, Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone,” W.C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues,” and the popular tune “Old Time Rock and Roll” that will bring to mind a young Tom Cruise dancing in “Risky Business.”

The Concert Band will perform “Afterburn” by Randall Standridge that induces the emotions of flying in a supercharged jet plane. The other pieces will include the elegant and harmonic “Air for Band” by Frank Erickson; Larry Daehn’s “As Summer Was Just Beginning (Song for James Dean),” and Roland Seitz’s “March Grandioso,” one of the most stately and distinctive marches ever composed.

On March 16, SFCC’s Contemporary and Chamber Choirs, directed by Dr. Christopher Kindle, will be joined by the SCHS Concert Chorale directed by Mitchell Martinez. Gwen Kappelman is the accompanist, and Russ Schupp is the percussionist for SFCC. Wesley Sisk is accompanist for SCHS.

SFCC’s Contemporary and Chamber choirs will each perform three songs. Selections will range from the show tune “Till There Was You” to Marianne Forman’s encouraging song “The Gift to Sing,” winner of Honorable Mention in the 2020 King’s Singers New Music Prize. The SCHS Concert Chorale will perform two songs, and all choirs will perform together “We Are the Music Makers” by Reginal Wright, which uses inspiring text from 19th century poet Arthur O’Shaughnessy.
