Sedalia Police Reports for February 16, 2024

Thursday night, Officers responded to the Casey’s store, 1601 East Broadway Boulevard in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival, one subject had already left the scene. It was discovered the subject had stolen from products from the store. Officers were able to identify the subject, but were not able to locate him. State charges are being submitted.

Sedalia Police were dispatched to the 900 block of South Kentucky Avenue in reference to property damage. Officers arrived and made contact with the victim, Franklin Terrell Stapley. Stapley reported damage was done to his door. It appeared that someone had intentionally thrown something at the glass, causing damage. The suspects are unknown at this time.

Officers took a report in the Police Station lobby from Matthew Logan regarding a theft. Logan stated the family dog had been stolen from the yard in the 1100 block of South Harding Avenue. The dog has not been located at this time, but a report has been made.

On the morning of January 28th, Officers were dispatched to the Prime Time* store, 216 West Broadway Boulevard to investigate a report of a robbery. The suspect had entered the store, and was immediately told to leave by staff. The suspect refused, asked the clerk if he wanted a haircut, and then displayed a pair of scissors in her hand. The clerk refused her, and she then asked if he wanted a mint. When the clerk refused again, she told him she wanted cigarettes and all the money in the register. The clerk refused, and told the suspect he would call the police. The suspect then stole a rose from the counter and left. Officers encountered the suspect crossing West Broadway Boulevard near South Ohio Avenue. Officers could see she had the pair of scissors in her hand. The suspect was ordered to drop the scissors, but refused. She then snapped the scissors at the Officer as she swung her arm. The suspect was then placed on the ground and restrained. The probable cause report notes the suspect had been already previously trespassed from the store. Lori Lynn Hadley, 51, of Sedalia, was arrested on charges of Robbery in the 1st Degree, Burglary in the 1st Degree, Armed Criminal Action, and Resisting Arrest*. Hadley was transported to the Pettis County Jail to be booked. Bond for Hadley was later set at $50,000 cash or surety.

Thursday afternoon, Officers were dispatched to a property damage report in the 400 block of West 7th Street. Teresa Capraro stated someone had smashed her phone.

On the afternoon of February 11th, a traffic stop was initiated near the intersection of East Broadway Boulevard and South Hancock Avenue. The registered owner of the vehicle had a suspended driving status. Officers attempted to stop the 2000 red Ford Taurus, but the vehicle began to accelerate. The vehicle ran stop signs at East 5th Street, and travelled up to 40 MPH in a 20 MPH zone before again running a stop sign at South Washington Avenue. As the vehicle continued to evade Officers, the decision was made to terminate the pursuit in the interests of public safety. The Officer saw the Taurus continue to travel at a high rate of speed through three more stop signs. Officers later continued the investigation at the address registered to the vehicle. There, Officers spoke with the registered owner, who stated her step son had been driving the vehicle. The suspect stated he failed to stop because he had warrants for his arrest**. Drake L. Ballew, 19, of Sedalia, was arrested on his Failure to Appear warrant on a charge of Property Damage in the 2nd Degree, as well as new charges of felony Resisting Arrest, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign, Careless Driving, and Operating a Motor Vehicle on the Highway Without a Valid License. Ballew was transported to the Pettis County Jail, pending a cash or surety bond of $3500 and a total cash only bond of $314.50.

Thursday morning, Officers were dispatched to a theft report in the 600 block of East 12th Street. Candace Younce stated that earlier that morning, someone stole a lawn mower from the residence.

Wednesday afternoon, Officers took a report over the phone from the Smoker’s Friendly Store, 1700 East Broadway Boulevard. The complainant was able to provide a license plate number of the suspect, and still pictures from the video surveillance. The subject was identified, and charges are being submitted to the Pettis County Prosecutor for Shoplifting.

*The Arrest Report and the Probable Cause statement refer to the name of the business as “Prime Time”. KSIS has been asked by ownership of the store to refer to the establishment as “Phillips 66”. 24PT-CR00105 in Casenet shows Hadley as charged with a felony Burglary in the 1st Degree and felony Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

**The Arrest Report states that Ballew had an additional warrant for his arrest other than the Property Damage charge. However, there are only two criminal infractions listed in Casenet at newstime for Ballew: 24PT-CR00154 and 22PT-CR01026.
