Kids, today would have been Jimi Hendrix's Seventieth Birthday.  Can you believe it?  It seems a little hard for us to believe I guess, since he's pretty much frozen in our collective consciousness at the age of 27.

Well, tonight, I thought after the Chiefs' Kingdome, we'd take a bit of time and celebrate his life and music.  So at 9:00 p.m. here on BOB FM,  we'll be playing some classic Hendrix tunes and hearing from people like Pete Townsend, Micky Dolenz, Peter Frampton, Billy Gibbons and more about their Hendrix memories, experiences, and how he influenced them.

I thought also I'd share my Experience and maybe you can share some of your own!  For me, my favorite song of his is "Manic Depression".  Here's a live version that's just great:

I remember I "found" Jimi Hendrix when I was about 14.  My father and mother had a lot of vinyl in the house, stored in the attic and basement, and I'd go through them.  I'd pull out ones that I'd heard of, some that I hadn't, and some that just had interesting covers.   My first Hendrix was just such a cover.

It's still very visually striking.  Bright colors, strange clothes, foreign (to me) font....  I wondered what could possibly be inside.  I had heard of Jimi Hendrix, of course, but I hadn't actually sat myself down to listen to him. So, I took the record with me into the basement and sat it on my little broken turntable/radio/tape deck, plugged in my headphones, and just sat and listened.  It was truly an amazing afternoon and I remember being a little annoyed with my parents for not having any other albums of his.

So tonight, we'll play some Hendrix here on BOB, and hopefully you'll comment and tell me your favorite songs of his or your thoughts.

Experienced,

Behka
