Two of the best sub-places in the USA can be found in Warrensburg, although most of us reading this are probably fairly close to the sub shop that came in #2 in the USA Today's Readers' Choice poll.

You've probably guessed which sandwich chain came second on USA Today's list. The list was determined by having USA Today editors and a panel of sandwich experts nominate their top picks for sandwich shops, sub-shops, and delis across America. Then, USA Today's readers voted.

Not surprisingly, Subway made the list. More surprising is that It came in second. It's not that Subway is a horrible sandwich place. It's the 500-pound gorilla of sub-shops, so it was bound to make the list. That said, the cost of its sandwiches and what you get for the money is why it surprises me it placed that high on the list. There are better sub-joints out there.

That's not to say West Central Missouri doesn't have mom-and-pop sandwich places serving terrific eats, either. One deli I want to try is the new Green Truck Delicatessen, next door to the Green Truck Bakery on Pine Street in Warrensburg. In Warrensburg, Meyer's Market on Holden and Tony's Market on South Maguire also offer subs. Of course, there's Mighty Melt in Sedalia, too, and if you haven't eaten there yet and had a sandwich, you need to.

But back to the list, if you've ever headed to the city, you've probably heard of some of these places. Here's USA Today's list from 10 - 1.

  • Jason's Deli (10)
  • Mendocino Farms (9)
  • Newk's Eatery (8)
  • Jersey Mike's Subs (7)
  • Firehouse Subs (6)
  • Earl of Sandwich (5)
  • Capriotti's (4)
  • Potbelly Sandwich Works (3)
  • Subway (2)
  • PrimoHoagies (1)

I've eaten at five of the other sandwich shops on this list and already shared my feelings about Subway with you. I would choose Jersey Mike's for an excellent steak and cheese sandwich. It's the best steak sandwich I've had from a sandwich chain.

Close behind is Capriotti's. Their classic Cheese Steak is good, too, as is their Grilled Chicken Parmesan. Don't forget they also have The Bobbie, an entire turkey dinner on a bun. Jason's Deli is good, although it's a little spendy. Their soups are good, as are their potatoes. My go-to was the Beefeater. I remember Potbelly being good, too. However, it's been several years since I've eaten there.

That brings us to the other sandwich shop that made USA Today's list, which is in Warrensburg, Firehouse Subs. I have two go-to sandwiches at Firehouse Subs: the Firehouse Steak & Cheese and the other is the Firehouse Metabll. Both are delicious and filling!  Their Chicken Parmagan Meatball Sandwich was a bit of a miss for me. I also really like that they have the Coke freestyle machine.

If you haven't checked out Firehouse, you need to, especially if you're looking for hot subs. There's a reason it's my go-to sandwich shop in Warrensburg.
