I Tried A Jimmy John’s Sub Just How I Like It, but Toasted!
So, Jimmy John's has rolled out toasted subs, I tried my favorite, and it was a bit different than I expected.
Wait, Jimmy Johns Has Toasted Subs?
NBC Chicago says Jimmy John's rolled out toasted subs on Monday, March 3, 2025. Today was apparently "Toasted Tuesday," the chain gave away one million dollars worth of sandwiches in appreciation for their customers' patience as they perfected their toasted subs.
Was there a large cry from Jimmy John's customers for toasted subs? How long does it take to figure out how to toast some bread and heat a sandwich? Why had I heard nothing about this until this morning? Usually, when sleuthing for things to talk about on the radio or write about here, I'm aware of these things. Not this time. Heck, I didn't even get a free sub. I paid around $12 for my #10 Hunter's Club and an ice cold Coca-Cola.
Does Jimmy John's Need Toasted Subs?
Count me as someone who thinks Jimmy John's doesn't need toasted subs. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy toasted and hot subs as much as the next person. Yet, in the three decades I've enjoyed Jimmy John's subs I've never really thought damn, I'd love this sandwich more if the bread were toasted.
The bread is one of my favorite parts of a Jimmy John's sub, but I'm perfectly OK with their cold sandwiches. Their roast beef or turkey mixed with mayo on their bread has a distinct taste that's never been duplicated anywhere else. I like it, I crave it, so really, it's not necessary if you ask me. If I want a heated sub, I'll go to a place like Firehouse or Jersey Mike's.
My Jimmy John's Toasted Sub Experience
When I opened it, this was my sub: the number #10 Hunter's Club double roast beef and provolone with mayo. I had them leave off the lettuce and tomato. It didn't look very appetizing.
It also seems like the Sedalia store has yet to perfect the art of toasted subs, although Subway's toasted subs tend to look like this, too. And how long have they been toasting subs?
Anyway, it tasted better than it looked. The bread was nice and soft on the outside, and there was a nice toast crunch when I took a bite. The roast beef, provolone, and mayo all melted together, and it was a decent sandwich. Only one thing was missing—that distinct signature Jimmy John's flavor I discussed earlier. That's a bit of miss if you ask me.

One thing bugged me: you can't get ANY sub toasted right now. They rolled out three new subs, which they suggest you get toasted, and you can get any of their favorites toasted. The other subs: Originals, Plain Slims, and Little Johns—nope. You can't toast those.
Would I Get It Again?
Maybe. It wasn't a bad sub at all and it was fixed how I like it. The bread was soft outside and had a crunch when biting into it. Yet -- I want that signature Jimmy John's flavor, and that's what this toasted sub was missing. Plus, while my tastes may have evolved beyond a Plain Slim, I don't always need or want double meat on my sandwich.
So, the bottom line for me is that I'm more likely to order the #2 Big John minus the lettuce and tomato and enjoy it cold, the way Jimmy John's has always done it.
