The SPD has sent out a press release in advance of the 4th of July fireworks celebration at the Missouri State Fairgrounds.

They are reminding all in attendance that the discharging of fireworks within the city limits is illegal (City Ordinance 36-123) without a permit.

Violations of the ordinance have grown over the years, the City said, with fireworks discharged near large crowds and small children.

As a result, the City said the SPD will deploy additional officers to the fairgrounds to enforce the ordinance that night, as well as additional officers citywide to respond to calls for service as well as deter impaired driving.

Keep in mind that once the fireworks show is over, all attendees must exit through one of two gates – the Main on West 16th and the Centennial Gate on South Limit.

All drivers must make a right turn while exiting the grounds, it was noted.

Eastbound 16th street traffic will be shut down and those exiting will make a dual right turn.

Those exiting through Centennial Gate will take a right turn into the outside lane of Limit. They will be able to maneuver into the inside lane a short distance south of that location.

Those walking to the event are encouraged to wear bright clothing and carry flashlights to increase their visibility, especially with all the traffic that will be in the area on that Friday night.

With that said, the SPD wished everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July.
