I recently bought a new vehicle, and I noticed the placement of the rearview mirror is a little lower than many cars, I assume, because of the car's tech. Looking into the passenger compartment straight through the windshield, I thought hanging anything off it was probably not a good idea because of how low the mirror is. And how my navigation screen pops up above the dash line. Then I wondered if hanging anything off your mirror in Missouri is legal.

It's not the first time that question has been asked or answered. I couldn't find anything on our site addressing the issue, but it's certainly been covered before. Like many of these questions, the law doesn't expressly forbid hanging things from your mirror;

According to Fox 2 Now, Missouri's driving rules focus more on anything that obstructs vision while driving than anything hanging from a mirror. However, the only thing expressly forbidden to hang from a mirror while driving is a disability parking space placard.

Fox 2 Now looked at the issue and concluded that hanging stuff from your mirror might be illegal. If whatever is hanging creates an obstructed view that makes it difficult to see out your window or the mirror itself.

In my new vehicle, between the mirror being lower and the nav screen popping above the dash line, even something like those tree air fresheners might create an obstructed view. Yet, I don't think that would be the case in most other vehicles I've owned or driven. At least, that hasn't been my experience.

There is one more reason to skip hanging things from your mirror: it could damage the mirror. Most mirrors are attached to your windshield with an adhesive or a heavy-duty glue. While a rosary or one of those tree air fresheners probably won't loosen the adhesive, if you go for the fuzzy dice, a rosary, and then some other trinket all hanging from the mirror, it could be a problem.

The bottom line is that you'll probably not get stopped in Missouri for something small and unobtrusive hanging from your rearview mirror, like one of those tree air fresheners. Now, something like a lanyard combined with fuzzy dice and one of the tree air fresheners, you could run into a problem.
