Revealing The Results Of Distracted Driving: We’re Actually All Fibbers
There are several things every driver in Mid Missouri knows for a fact. Driving under the influence is bad, driving distracted is just as bad, and you never turn left into the Taco Bell on Limit.
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. To be fair, let's take a second and make sure we all understand what is considered distracted driving.
So we can pretty much all agree, distracted driving is bad. We shouldn't do it. We see the accidents. We heard about Jimmy's cousin's third wife who was texting while driving. And the thing is, most of us claim that we don't allow ourselves to be distracted behind the wheel. What?
In fact, according to PR Newswire's survey, not only do we all know its wrong, but we're all perfect angels that never do anything of the sort. We see it in other drivers, though.
According to the research, Americans are witnessing dangerous driving behaviors regularly:
85% of Americans think distracted driving is as dangerous as drinking and driving
89% witness speeding at least a couple times a week
67% witness red light running at least once a month
65% witness a driver using their phone behind the wheel at least a couple times a week
60% have witnessed speeding in a school zone
Yet, when it comes to our driving, like I said, we're all angels, apparently. Three fourths of the respondents said they NEVER used their phone while driving, half said they NEVER speed, and most people said they never speed through a school zone.
So. Apparently even though we see people using their phones all the time, we see people speeding and all that... it's not us, though. Everyone else is being a terrible driver, but we're not. So if everyone is claiming not to do it,.. shouldn't we NOT see it?
Everybody does it but you, right? Right. Or, you're a lying liar from Lyingtown who is now the mayor of Fibberville. You know that sometimes you mess with your phone to change the song on an open stretch, or you lean over to grab that Chapstick that fell between the seats when you're at the light, or you only have a few fries on the way home.
Let's be real here. You know what you should and shouldn't be doing behind the wheel. You know you shouldn't be on your phone, or eating, or reading, or dancing, or whatever it is you're doing. You should be concentrated on the driving experience.
So since we're all perfect angels, and we all know what we SHOULD be doing, can we just agree to be a little more careful this month?

Let's start with baby steps. Little things, and then we can graduate to more. Begin with eliminating all distractions for just this month. Then maybe just a week more. Then just til after the Fair. By then, hopefully it'll be a habit. Let's do it together!
Concentratingly yours,
Behka
