If you were looking at the night sky at the right time this past weekend, you were treated to a brilliant fireball that was spotted exploding over Illinois. Photos and videos captured the moment it happened.

According to the American Meteor Society, this crazy sky event was reported by at least 81 people including many in Illinois Saturday, January 24, 2026

Along with many photos that were snapped by residents who quickly grabbed their phone cameras, several videos have also been shared that captured this fireball.

What exploded over Illinois likely wasn't a meteor?

If you watch the fiery trail, you'll notice that it doesn't look like a typical meteor and that's because it likely wasn't. This appears to be space debris possibly from a rocket that was burning up after reentering the atmosphere. I haven't seen a definitive explanation as of the date of this writing, but I've seen many pictures and videos of space junk burning up and this event looks exactly like what I've seen in the past. Still, it doesn't make the sight any less spectacular and one of the benefits of nearly everyone having cameras on their phones in this era is we can all see pictures and video we likely wouldn't have seen in years past.
