The smartest thing that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise ever did was introduce a revolving door of ghost pirate enemies. I don’t really care why Javier Bardem’s character hates Jack Sparrow, nor do I think for a moment that this is the film that will permanently kill Johnny Depp’s character off for good, but those plots points are secondary, the franchise’s equivalent of a ghost McGuffin (a McGhostin?). All I really care about is seeing charismatic actors like Bardem play campy villains.

Therefore, the latest trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales seems to show the best and worst of the franchise in one go. Bardem’s ghostly Captain Salazar appears to be a standout in a franchise that has already allowed actors like Naomie Harris and Bill Nighy to pull out all the stops, but Depp seems to be going through his same tired slapstick routine at Jack Sparrow. Are all pirates this stupid? If this trailer is to be believed  —  as we watch Here we watch Jack Sparrow lose his pants, fall face-first into a man-sized mud puddle, and prance-run away from danger for the umpteenth time  —  the answer is an overwhelming yes. We’ll have to see which side of the film’s instincts wins out.

Here’s the full plot synopsis for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales:

The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea — notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth, a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry, a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will feature Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, and Orlando Bloom, as well as new franchise newbies Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario, and Brenton Thwaites. You can catch it in theaters on May 26, 2017.
