Warrensburg Gets $4.5 M Grant For Stormwater Work
The City of Warrensburg has been approved to receive a $4.5 million grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for stormwater work as part of Phase 2 of the Rethink Maguire Project.
Rethink Maguire, formerly known as the Maguire Street Corridor Project, is Warrensburg's process to transform the Maguire Street corridor, which connects Highway 50 to the University of Central Missouri and the larger community. The project aims to increase access for all residents of Warrensburg, especially those within low-income neighborhoods, roadway improvements on Maguire, Warrensburg's highest-volume thoroughfare, enhanced pedestrian and bicycling connections, and improved stormwater collection.
The $4.5 million grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources will be used for stormwater work during the second phase of Rethink Maguire. This phase involves the construction of two underground stormwater detention basins and equipment for treating microplastics.
MDNR's Emerging Contaminants Grant provides funds for projects that aim to address the challenges of newly discovered contaminants, such as Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in the water supply and that promote public health and resilient infrastructure.
According to the MDNR, PFAS are a group of manmade fluorinated chemicals used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s because they can repel water and oil. They have been widely used in everything from cookware to cleaning products. Studies have shown that exposure to some PFAS in the environment is linked to harmful health effects in humans and animals. You can learn more about PFAS on the Missouri Department of Natural Resources website.
According to the City of Warrensburg, the Clean Water Commission approved its application for $4,653,660 in funds from the Emerging Contaminants Grant on January 8, 2025. The city will receive $4,550,231 in funding. Additionally, the City is on the contingency list for the remaining $103,429 if funds become available.
Currently, Maguire Street is closed between Market Street and Culton Street. Some of Market Street and Culton Street east of Maguire Street are closed. Maguire Street is anticipated to reopen for northbound traffic by the end of the week, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitted. Businesses are open and accessible during construction. Check out the Rethink Maguire Facebook page for detours and the latest construction information.
