The stink you smell today might not be from Sedalia's landfill. Our neighbor Iowa has been doing some work, and the wind has picked up the stench and sent it to Missouri.

I smelled the funk on the way to the office this morning, but honestly, since I was on Highway 50 around Tyson and the Sedalia landfill, I didn't pay much attention to it. Because, well, sometimes, it just smells a little stinky in that area anyway. So I chalked it up to the same old smells of industry and garbage.

Yet this afternoon, I noticed an article published by KCTV 5 about a funky smell in the air. It seems others around the state have noticed an unpleasant odor as well. It turns out it's manure. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources in Des Moines was laying manure fertilizer. Since today has been a windy day, the winds have carried the stench downwind to Missouri.

So, was that what I smelled coming into work? I don't know. I did step outside and take a few breaths to see what my nose would pick up, and I think I smelled the slight fragrance of manure, but I can't be sure. It seemed like that could be it. Then again, I found myself somewhat close to our station's dumpster. So maybe that was it.

I don't know; maybe I was smelling our dumpster or industry and the dump outside town.

That said, for today, let's blame Iowa for the stink. Why? Because we can. And the landfill stench from Mount Menards will still be there tomorrow.
