I know it's part of their thing. You're getting a Blizzard at the drive-through of Dairy Queen and they tip it upside down. The Blizzard stays put in the cup, and then they turn it right side up and hand it to you through the window. Where it promptly becomes a melty mess in your cup holder. Seriously Dairy Queen put a lid on it.

Back when I lived in Indiana, the DQ franchise that owned the store we patronized always put lids on their Blizzards. They also had chocolate ice cream, but that's a story for another day. The point is, the Blizzards I got never became a melty mess of goo that dripped down the side of the cups. It never left a blob or a mess or a streak of chocolate ice cream on my car's interior. Or dripped into the cup holder.

Then I moved to Texas. Where they do that turn the blizzard upside down thing and don't believe in lids. And I get it. Back in the day when people were most likely to walk into the Dairy Queen or up to the window to get their treat, they probably ate it there too. Or at least sat in the car to eat it. There never was a melty mess, because four or five spoonfuls in, disaster averted.

Today though, I suspect many of us are taking our treats home to eat. Sometimes they ask if I'd like a lid, and I always say yes if asked and occasionally I remember to ask them for a lid even if they don't ask me. In those cases, the melty mess a Blizzard can make doesn't happen, at least not until I'm home and pull the lid off in the kitchen where it's way easier to clean up.

So yeah Dairy Queen, put a lid on it.
