The most difficult trail to hike in Missouri has been debated for years, and it’s subjective based upon what is “difficult” for you. The trail most mentioned by hikers who’ve been all across the state is Mina Sauk Falls Trail. South of Elephant Rocks State Park and East of Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park, Mina Sauk Falls Trail will put your fitness and ability to the test.

Mina Sauk Falls Trail is 2.9 miles of various terrain, and includes both Missouri’s tallest waterfall and highest range (Tom Sauk Mountain). This hike could take you an hour and a half, up to almost 3 hours to complete. The Ozark Trail’s Tom Sauk section joins the Mina Sauk Falls trail for a mile or so. At the top of the falls the Ozark trail descends to the valley while the Mina Sauk loops back around up the mountain.

Should you want to experience the falls at their peak, take to the trail after a good rain. Keep in mind there are bridges to cross, so after wet weather you will have to cross water. This hike is legit, so make sure you have proper gear and plenty of water to drink.
