Six Things To For The Fourth of July (Other Than Watch Fireworks)

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love a good fireworks show as much as the next person.

But you don't have to sit around all weekend just waiting for Monday night.  There are actually a few things to do that weekend and the day of the holiday that could be fun for everybody.  So I found a few, and bam, here we are.

1.  Fourth of July Tie Dye.

This is actually happening this weekend, so you can be ready for the 4th.  It's a fun tye-dye event at the Art Room here in Sedalia. It's 20 bucks, so that's pretty reasonable for a t-shirt and not having to clean up afterwards. And you can wear your creation at the parade! Check out a few details here.

2. Spofest Poetry Night.

This one is happening online. They'll have several featured authors, an open mic, and giveaways. They'll start a bit before six on the Tuesday after the holiday. You can get details about participating and streaming here.

3. America's Superheroes Parade.

The parade will be at the Avenues, of course. It starts at 10 that morning (July 4th), and it's free to enter. Parade registration is due June 28th by 5pm to Sedalia Parks and Recreation or slynde@sedaliaparks.com. They'll have different categories for people to be judged on to win prizes like Most Patriotic, Most Original, Most Spirited, and Best Representation of the theme “America's Superheroes”.

4. 4th of July Picnic.

This will be a nice free lunch over at Centennial Park. It starts at 11, after the parade. They'll have free hot dogs, chips, and a drink will be available one per person (so don't get grabby now). You don't have to go right after the parade though, they'll be doing it til 1.

5. Star Spangled Swim.

If you want to go swimming after lunch (consult Mom about how long you have to wait to swim), you can pop over to the Centennial Pool for their Star Spangled Swim. Swimming is half price and free for military and veterans with an ID. It'll be all day that the pool is open, from 11-5.

6. Firecracker Mile.

This will be held the morning of the fourth, at 8:00 a.m. They'll have a bunch of different categories for runners and walkers of different abilities and ages. $25 for adults 13+ ; $15 for kids 12 and under. It might be a good way to get your blood pumping before the parade. It'll be held at the Liberty Park, and I'm sure they'll have the route all marked off.
