Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Bugs—Sedalia’s Got the Glow!
Gentle Reader, I was a child of the nineteen hundred and eighties. It seems like a long time ago, and it was. But what was true then can often be true now. Let's unpack that.
When I was young, my parents were careful about money. Of course they were - they were a young family with small children, first time home buyers, and not always did our household have two incomes. So we always found ways to do fun things with the stuff we had lying around at home.
At New Year's, we didn't buy noisemakers. We ran outside and slammed pots and pans together. At Fourth of July, we sat in the yard and watched the fireworks that were being shot off on the Fairgrounds. When it was Halloween, costumes were often made instead of bought. And of course, when it was time to catch lightning bugs, we'd do that ourselves, too. We'd grab some old jelly jars, stab the lid with a knife, and run ourselves ragged all over the yard to catch those things.
It might be a simple little memory that kids don't have access to these days - unless you want them to, with some other kids their own age. What's that, Gentle Reader? You don't know what I'm talking about? Let's discuss.
Yes, the Sedalia Parks and Rec is hosting a Lightening Bug party on July 15th. It's open to all ages, and you don't have to bring anything but a five buck note. They'll provide the jars to catch the fireflies (which the kids customize), and some smores for you to make by a fire. So really, they're giving your kid that same memory we had back in the day - but cheaper and with less mess. You don't have to clean up the paints to customize the jars when they're done. And you certainly don't have to go to the store and buy marshmallows and chocolate and all that - and then have a bag of marshmallows to sit in your cabinet and slowly go to waste by getting hard. And, you won't get an annoying ticket from the Sedalia Fire Department for trying to light a firepit in the back.

I assume you'll probably want to bring a few lawn chairs, and maybe fill up your water bottle before you leave, but other than that? You're set, and you get to just go home at the end of the night. Win.

Fireflyingly yours,
Behka
