Sedalia Parks Rolls Out Fun in a Government Van and Somehow,…. It Totally Works
It’s July — and you know what that means: it's so humid and hot outside, you've probably already noted that walking to the mailbox feels like walking through a hot sponge.
No, I'm joking, folks. It’s officially National Parks and Recreation Month, the perfect time to celebrate all things playgrounds, green spaces, backyard games, and spontaneous fun. You know, all the things you and your family love!
This year, the Sedalia Parks and Recreation team is kicking things off with something big — and mobile. They told us all about it in a recent social media post. I'll sum it up for ya. After seven years of dreaming, planning, and watching government surplus auctions like hawks, they’ve finally made it happen. Introducing the brand-new(ish) Sedalia Parks Mobile Rec Van — a retired 2014 utility van that once served the water department in Lenexa, Kansas. Now it serves joy, laughter, and recreational chaos. Sounds like a pretty deece upgrade!
Yes, the van has seen things. Pipes. Mud. Possibly municipal spreadsheets. Maybe even a little time parked...down by the river. But now, after a serious glow-up and a heavy dose of creativity, it’s been reborn as a roving center of fun. Think of it as a community center on wheels, just with more sidewalk chalk and fewer filing cabinets.
The Mobile Rec Van is loaded up with games, gear, activities, and enough energy to tire out an entire classroom of third graders. Think probably like the kind of energy that young ladies who are going into their first year of teaching Kindergarten would bring. It’s set to roll into parks, neighborhoods, and community events throughout the year, bringing recreation directly to the people. No need to sign up, dress up, or show up anywhere specific — the van brings the fun to you.

From cornhole and crafts to sports gear and bubble machines, they’ve packed this thing with something for everyone. It’s a little retro, a little grassroots, and a lot of joy packed into a white government van — which somehow works perfectly.
To see where the Mobile Rec Van is heading next, check out their full July calendar of events. The Sedalia Parks and Recreation team is ready to make this Parks and Rec Month one to remember — all they need is a little sunshine, a little space, and a lot of community spirit. They probably won't have an ice cream man like song to play for you when they're coming, but you'll know it when they're there!
Vanningly yours,
Behka
