Making small talk at holiday parties can feel a bit awkward, especially if you don't know many people.

You'd think that kind of stuff would come easy to me, since, you know, I talk for a living.  But it took some effort on my part to get better at this stuff, especially with strangers.

But don’t worry! A fun icebreaker can help kick things off and spark some great conversations.

Here are four friendly topics to consider, that aren't too personal.

1. Ask about their drink.

This is a perfect opener—especially if they’re holding a colorful mixed drink instead of a plain beer. It’s a fun way to dive in!

2. Find out how they know the host.

This question usually leads to interesting stories! If they met the host at work, you can ask about their job, or if it’s a college connection, you might chat about where they're from.

3. Chat about the food or music.

You could say something like, "Are you getting tired of all this Christmas music yet?" It’s a light topic, but remember, there’s only so much to say, so keep your ears open for a chance to switch it up!

4. Ask about their holiday plans.

Everyone has something going on during the holidays, whether they're looking forward to it or feeling a bit overwhelmed by family gatherings. It’s a great way to connect and share some laughs!

These topics can help break the ice and make your holiday party conversations warm and enjoyable!

Well, good luck out there. And if all these fail.... just find the family pet.  That'll work out fine. Have fun mingling!

Minglingly yours,
Behka
