One of the best small towns in America is less than an hour away from Sedalia. I'm talking about Boonville, which has made Thrillist's "The Must Visit Small Town In Every State" list.

Thrillist says about their list: "We looked from coast to coast at villages, townships, and even islands, where the living is easy and the pace reliably slow. These spots are rich in comfort food and craft brews, music and artists, natural attractions and quirky roadside stops, and, best of all, free from big city distractions and crowds."

So what does Thrillist have to say about Boonville?

With over 400 registered historic sites and the town's location more or less in the middle of Missouri, Thrillist likes the history and raw Americana you'll find there. Thrillist likes the name, derived from the town's founders, Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone, who also happened to be sons of Daniel Boone.

Yet it's truly the history of the area that Thrillist seems to like the best. They suggest touring the Native American Burial Grounds on the riverfront, checking out the Civil War history, and Jesse James, who also left his mark on the area. They also like checking out Budweiser's Clydesdales at the Warm Springs Ranch. Unfortunately, their suggestion of staying at the Rivercene Mansion's Bed and Breakfast is a no-go, as it has since closed.

The Go Boonville website says, "Boonville will impress you with everything it has to offer. With a lively, stimulating cultural scene, combined with small-town charm and hospitality, Boonville will lure you in time and time again."

With festivals scheduled throughout the year, Boonville is a great escape, especially for those looking to ditch the big city for a weekend or escape their small town for a few days. You can learn more about all the fun things to do in Boonville by clicking here.

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.

Keep reading to see if your favorite beach town made the cut.
