Looking For A Pet? Don’t Shop, Adopt. It’s Critical Right Now!
Old Drum Animal Shelter in Warrensburg has temporarily paused all intakes due to being at full capacity. In its Facebook post, the shelter reports that many other shelters and rescues are also at or near full capacity. So, if you're considering adopting a cute kitty or handsome pup, now might be a good time to make that happen.
Old Drum writes that the shelter has no open kennels for dogs, cats, strays, or surrenders and that more than 200 animals are currently in its custody. While fosters are essential to the shelter's operation, the shelter cannot depend on them to house most residents. To best serve the community, the shelter needs to get some of these beautiful animals adopted and into loving homes.
Aside from adoption, there are some great ways to get involved. First, you can look at the shelter's website, and if you find a shelter animal (or two or three) that you think is beautiful but unable to add to your pack, share those on social media to increase their adoption audience. Second, the shelter is looking for volunteers to take pictures and videos of shelter animals so they can make more content to get eyes on its shelter residents.
Fostering is another role you can play to help relieve overcrowding. Fostering involves caring for an animal in your home and temporarily making them part of your family. Old Drum has a variety of options when it comes to their foster program. Love puppies and kittens? They have a foster program for that. Want to help a dog or cat recover from illness? They have a foster program for that. They also have a foster program called Dogs Day Out for folks who'd like to help but can't keep a pet in their home, and a foster program designed for people to foster an animal they're considering adopting.
In addition to adopting an animal or fostering animals, Old Drum Animal Shelter always accepts monetary donations and applications for volunteers, committee members, and board members. You can learn more about Old Drum Animal Shelter here.
