City of Sedalia’s Tax Income Up Nine Percent YTD Over 2022

The Sedalia City Council wrapped up business in a near-record 13-minute session Monday night, with all members present.

After accepting meeting minutes from Planning & Zoning, and the Traffic Advisory Commission, Council heard a financial update from Jessica Pyle.

Pyle indicated that sales taxes are up 2.1% over the previous month, and 6.5% up year to date from 2022.

Use taxes are up 97.6 % over the previous month, and 12.6 % up year to date from 2022.

Franchise and cigarette taxes are down 9.4 % from the previous month, and up 51.8% year to date from 2022.

Transportation taxes are up 11.3 % from the previous month, and up 8.3% year to date from 2023.

Property taxes collected are up 21.3% from the previous month, and up 9.1 % year to date from 2022.

Overall, tax income for the City of Sedalia is up 6.3 % from the previous month, and up 9.1 % year to date from 2022.

Following the financial presentation, Council approved a rezoning request from Billy Kimmons, principal architect for Hood-Rich Architecture on behalf of Chris Hendricks, representing Burrell, Inc.

Burrell has plans to build an 8100-square-foot outpatient behavior health clinic at 1801 West Main.

Burrell requested that the area be re-zoned entirely for C-3 Commercial use. Part of the property was previously zoned M-1 Light Industrial. The P & Z Commission in its previous meeting, approved and recommended the rezoning after a public hearing was held.

Council, under Public Works, then approved a budget amendment in the amount of $4,399.55 for an increase in the cost of a generator maintenance agreement with Martin Energy Group Services for FY 2024. This includes the City's General Fund, Transportation Fund, WPC Fund and Water Fund.

One liquor license was renewed Monday night and five were renewed.

A new license went to Rebecca Embry dba Korner Lounge, 1604 S. Ohi, for a special event (a wedding at The Venue, 219 S. Ohio) for July 22.

Renewals were approved for:

*Allen Charra dba B & B Theatres, 4104 W. Main, for liquor by the drink and Sunday sales, $750

*Virginia Kay Jones dba Prime Time #3, 1320 South Limit, for packaged liquor and Sunday Sales, $450

*Virginia Kay Jones dba Prime Fav Trip, 216 W. Broadway, for packaged liquor and Sunday Sales, $450

*Steve Swafford dba Grellner Sales & Service, 1510 W. Henry, for wholesale beer and wholesale intoxicating liquor, $350

*Nicole Walker dba Discount Smokes & Liquor, 2205 S. Limit, for packaged liquor and Sunday Sales, $450

Mayor Andrew Dawson appointed Bryan Jenkins to the Sedalia Main Streets Board of Directors, Jenkins replaces Elizabeth (Libby) Heflin.

Under Good & Welfare, Council heard a complaint from a resident, Kim Yoststick, who complained about speeders in her area, adding that Southwest Boulevard is a “drag street.” She predicted that “someone's going to get killed. It's ridiculous.”

Mayor Dawson thanked the woman for her comments and promised to look into the matter.
