Help Your Little Ones Thrive With Sedalia’s Head Start Program
It's getting to be that time of year - school is ending, and summer is coming. But this is a very important time for NEXT year's schooling, as well. The Missouri Valley Community Action Agency is signing up kids today for their Head Start Program.
I'm Pretty Sure I've Heard of That. What is it?
Head Start is a program for kids ages three to five to give them some extra skills to help them in school. They offer special services for children with disabilities, assistance in maintaining medical and dental health (After all, if a kid's tooth hurts, or they're in pain, they're not learning) and educational activities that promote individual learning for children. They also help out kids who come from families with limited incomes. And this program is no cost to the families, which is a huge deal.
What it ISN'T, is a day care. This is a comprehensive educational program that focuses on the well being and success of the whole child. Mentally, physically, emotionally.
So What Do They Do?
Each class is staffed with a teacher, and education support assistant and a family support assistant. They offer two schools - one at 357 Buckner Court, which offers one day of classes, and the other, at 700 Martin Luther King Drive, which offers two classes.
They have breakfast, lunch and snacks for different classes, transportation to and from classes for kids in the city limits and qualified teachers and teachers assistants. Parents are welcome and encouraged to volunteer, too! Monthly family visits enhance the center/home connection while encouraging child and family development.
Okay, So How Do We Sign Up?
Well, the whole thing starts with an application. You can stop by the Family Resource Center, which is 505 South Kentucky (think the little buildings behind the Slavic Church, the one by the Liberty Center). But if you work, or you're not sure if all your questions are answered, you can ask over the phone before you enroll. So give them a call at 660-826-0804, and check out their website to get more information or to get signed up.

For folks that don't live in our area, they do have several offices in other counties, so go ahead and look up the one in your area. All you need is proof on income for the last 12 months or your tax return, proof of your child's birth date and social security numbers for the whole family. Give your kids the head start they deserve!
Startingly yours,
Behka
