Look Whose Back: Kansas City Royals Sign Zack Greinke
Multiple media outlets including Sports Illustrated and KMBC-TV are reporting that the Kansas City Royals have signed pitcher Zack Greinke to a one-year deal worth $13 million dollars pending him passing a physical.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal broke the story on Twitter saying that sources told The Athletic that the team and Greinke had reached an agreement.
Sports Illustrated characterized the move as shocking, as earlier in the day it was reported the Royals were hunting for a right-handed starter.
According to Sports Illustrated's article, Greinke over the course of two seasons with the Houston Astros pitched 300 innings and posted a 3.89 ERA. His record last season was 11-6 with a 4.16 ERA over 171 innings. He struck out 120 and walked 36.
Greinke started his career with the Royals in 2004 finishing fourth in Rookie of the Year voting and showing much potential. The Royals traded Greinke to the Milwaukee Brewers in a package that brought Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar to the Royals who helped the team to a World Series victory in 2015. This According to Sports Illustrated.
Late Wednesday afternoon the Kansas City Royals confirmed the deal.
Earlier today the Royals sent left-handed starter Mike Minor to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for reliever Amir Garrett.
