Old Farmer’s Almanac: Will Missouri See A Spring Warm Up?
As we prepare for another blast of arctic cold in Missouri, the Old Farmer's Almanac has released its 2025 spring forecast. Will Missouri see a spring warm-up, or will we be bundling up this April?
While this winter hasn't been too bad so far, I mean it's Missouri, and I'd say most years, January and February in Missouri give us the most inhospitable weather of the year. So, having some arctic temperatures and snow shouldn't be too surprising. We don't have to like it, but we have to accept it. Yet, what can we expect this spring? Will April roll in and warm up nicely, or will April come in and be chilly, cold, and gray?
Remember that the Old Farmer's Almanac weather predictions consider weather conditions over time, like the season, not precisely how the weather will be on a specific day in April or May. They develop their forecasts using solar science, climatology, and meteorology.
They say we are moving deeper into Solar Cycle 25, which will reach its maximum around July. Historically, High solar activity levels have been linked to warmer weather, although this relationship has weakened in recent decades.
Additionally, they look at ocean-atmosphere weather patterns. They're monitoring a weak La Nina phase of the El Nino/Southern Oscillation, a warm Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, and a cool Pacific Decadal Oscillation, as well as solar activity and equatorial stratospheric winds known as the Quasi-Bienial Oscillation. These factors impact how warm or cold it will be in the spring.
Overall, they predict warmer-than-normal temperatures for most of the United States, with southern and central California, the desert Southwest, south Florida, and the western Ohio Valley the exceptions. These areas can expect normal to below-normal temperatures.
Much of the country will experience more rainfall than usual; however, several areas will experience dry conditions. The Old Farmer's Almanac expects a rough, severe weather season, especially in the deep South.
The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts a warm spring for Missouri, especially in the north. However, we're in one of the areas that will be dry. Rainfall is expected to be below normal across the region, with heat waves and dry conditions likely to continue through the summer.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but perhaps we should embrace any precipitation we get through the rest of the winter, so yaknow, at least we're not dealing with drought conditions this spring. Otherwise, I certainly can get behind the Missouri forecast the Old Farmer's Almanac put out.
