The Sedalia Police Department sent out a reminder ahead of the 4th of July that discharging fireworks within the city limits without a permit is illegal. Additionally, they warned residents not to bring fireworks to the Sedalia Parks & Recreation fireworks show at the Missouri State Fairgrounds on July 4.

In their release, Sedalia PD says, "Over the years, violations of this ordinance have grown, with fireworks often being discharged in the parking area of this event around large crowds."

Sedalia Police explains that the Parks & Rec fireworks show is intended for everyone to enjoy a large fireworks display from a distance and in a safe environment. Therefore, this year, Sedalia Police will have additional officers at the fairgrounds enforcing the fireworks ordinance. Additionally, the police department will have extra officers on duty city-wide to respond to calls for service, including fireworks ordinance violations and impaired driving.

Those planning on attending the fireworks at the Missouri State Fairgrounds can only exit the event through two gates: the Main Gate, located on West 16th Street, and the Centennial Gate, located on South Limit. Both exits will only be restricted to right turns, and the eastbound 16th Street lanes will be shut down. For those walking to the event, Sedalia Police recommend wearing bright clothing and bringing a flashlight.
