Tomboys and Girly Girls

Listening to a coworker discuss how differently her girls behave and like to dress  made me think about my own childhood. I was never one of the girly girls. I grew up with two brothers and played with radio-controlled cars, Hotwheels, racetracks, and got just as rough and dirty as the boys did. How about you? Are you a girly girl or a tomboy?

Before I go any further, let's see how Urban Dictionary defines a girly girl. "A very feminine girl. Very feminine in her movements..." I've known a few of those in my lifetime, but couldn't really relate to the pink bows in their ponytails or their fears of getting a little dirty.

So, what's the official definition of a tomboy? "A girl who dresses and sometimes behaves the way boys are expected to...often brought up with a lot of brothers or a child of a single father." There you go, that was me. I was the girl in the jeans and tee-shirt, wondering how the other girls walked around in their heels without planting their faces into the floor.
