Behka’s Secret Stash: Beirut

Kids, tonight I thought we'd discuss my love of the trombone.

Not really, just kidding.  But this young man and his band are truly lovers of the brass.  Beirut is one of those groups like Bright Eyes or Nine Inch Nails - in that there is a band name, and there is often more than one person on stage, but in actuality the creative drive is with one person.  Like Bright Eyes is basically Conor Oberst, an Nine Inch Nails is really just Trent Reznor, Beirut is Zach Condon.   Zach is a young man who is from New Mexico, and fell in love with what he calls "Gypsy Music."

If it has an accordion and a brass section, Zach loves it.  Beirut has branched out a bit in recent years to include a bit of electronic and/or mood music, but my favorite records from him were the first few, particularly his breakout album, 'Gulag Orkestar.'   Don't worry, he sings in English.  He just SEEMS like he should be from Europe.
