Admittedly, I'm not much of a scary movie person. Let me unpack that. It's not that I don't like the genre.  I mean, I like a good scary movie just as much as the next person.  But for me, a lot of the time.... they're just not scary.

And I have to be clear here - I'm talking about being scared.  Not about being startled.  If a ghost or a creature jump scares me, that's not really scaring me.  That's startling me.  That's different.  Like, I have to feel fear or dread for more than five seconds in order for it to count, to me.

I look at it this way.  If something's not real, it's not scary to me.  Like, you could try all you want to frighten me with the Boogey Man, but he ain't real.  So if it's not a real threat, it's not scary to me.   So I wouldn't find a movie like.... Poltergeist scary.  It's interesting, sure, and I like ghost stories.

But ghosts aren't real.

So they're not scary to me, you see?  But stories about home invasions or serial killers, or even about outbreaks of diseases...those are scary to me.  If there's a link to reality, if some part of it can really happen to me, that counts.

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
