OverThinking The Classics: Heart

Already we're in trouble.  She's in a weakened state?  What happened to her?

This makes me wonder if this guy isn't you know, someone who is supposed to be a supernatural character.  She couldn't run away? She says she couldn't run away "it seemed", so she did want to run away, but just was paralyzed or something?  It didn't feel real?  He looked through her?  What is going on here,  Miss Wilson? You know actual magic isn't real, right?

Wait.  "You don't have to love me YET"?! Where is her choice in in this situation? What If she doesn't want to love you at ALL? It sounds like he's expecting it, like it's a command that's going to happen, but he's allowing it not to happen right away. That's if it's not a euphemism for intercourse, that is.  If it IS, that's another level of gross.  You expect her to  sleep with you just because? Like, it's going to happen whether she actually wants to or not?

And why do they have to do drugs? That just seems to be unnecessary.  It just sounds like a reckless and frankly stupid decision. Sure, go do drugs with what might be a highly manipulative stranger.  Maybe THAT is what is so "magical" about him.  He's a drug dealer, he's a drug taker, or he's actually drugging her. Maybe the "magic" is just that, drugs.

Okay.  Okay. WHUT. Spells?  Singing at night, or months of moon, as she puts it?  Are you in a cult?!  Are you in a crazy drug cult with some dude that pretends to be warlock?  Actually... that doesn't sound too far off from some people I've met. I can picture a rat tailed dude named Travis who has one too many t-shirts with wolves on them walking around an artificial campfire talking about crystals.

Well, at least Mom is doing something right here.  She knows something isn't right.  She doesn't trust this guy, either.  Why does she have to live away from her home to be with this guy? Does she not see her family or friends anymore that she's with him? It has to be that she comes with him and leaves her life behind?  Again, sounds very culty to me. Kind of like a Jim Jones or David Koresh kinda thing, where a dude that seems kind of off manages to convince tons of people to do what he wants them to do. That's what they always say happens in these stories, they isolate people from their friends and family and feed them a bunch of jive about how righteous, or in this case, magical, they are.  Actually...now that I think about it, there is some kind of vocalisation happening at the end of the song. Like in that clip above, about 4:10.  Is that the cult chanting?

And... this might just be me reading into it again, but Mom calls her a baby.  A girl.  How old is our protagonist in this song?  If she's still a teenager and this is a grown man, that's an issue. He might be "magic", but.. if he's like 38 and she's 17, that's a problem.  I can easily see an older man controlling a young girl with drugs and promises.

CONFIRMATION.  He literally called her a child.  She's probably underage, and it just wasn't as big a deal back then? Just because you treat her like an adult, doesn't mean she is one.

So basically, this song is catchy and rocky, but messed up from here to the get out.  Our underage singer is being manipulated by a guy who may or may not think he is a warlock, taking drugs in some kind of strange cult and isolating her from her family. Today that would definitely be grounds for an intervention. Maybe some kidnapping charges.  Or maybe just a reality check.

I wanna think that that Wilson sisters meant for us to hear it like that, to know that something is desperately wrong in this situation. But we just sang along and didn't pay attention.  Lesson learned here, folks: stay away from warlock wanna be drug cults? Or maybe the lesson is more simple: Say No To Drugs.
