Guys, I don't really talk about this kind of stuff much, but if it gets you some unexpected cash in your account, I'm all for it.

Facebook has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit for $725 MILLION, and YOU are probably entitled to some money.  Maybe not a lot, but some.

Do you remember what this is about? Basically it's from a big scandal from what, five years ago?  You remember, if you think about it.  Facebook was accused of selling your information to a third party without your permission.  They still deny doing that, by the way.  Yeah, right.  Tell the other hand while you're at it.

Anyway, if you have an account, take a second and look at your profile information.  I, apparently, have had an account since 2011. If you had a Facebook account between May of 2007 to December of 2022, you can file a claim online, (yes, that's the link) or download a form and mail it in.  It only takes a few minutes to do.  It took me all of two minutes, I think, and that was partially because I didn't remember which email I associated with the account. You just have to give them your user name, your contact information, and how you'd like to receive your payment.  And don't worry, you don't have to give them your bank information.  However, if you don't have a Paypal or Venmo, you might have to. They do have an option where you can get a direct deposit or send it to a Mastercard. Doesn't look like they have a mail option for a check.

The deadline is August 25th.  And the money wouldn't arrive until after that.  So just long enough to forget about it, am I right?

They haven't said how much each person is entitled to, but don't count on a big payout. I know what you're saying. "But, Behk.  It's over 700 million bucks!" I know that sounds like a big number, but... don't expect to get much more than the price of a cup of coffee.  If that.

For starters, the lawyers' fees and court costs will eat up a decent chunk, and if EVERYONE in the U.S. who's had a Facebook account gets paid, that means it could be shared among 250 million to 280 million users.  Of course, not all those people will file a claim. And they are giving people MORE money based on how many months during those 15 years you had an account, so you're better off the longer you were on Facebook.  But still, it never amounts to too much - I think I got like, three bucks from a class action lawsuit once.

Still, any bonus money that turns up in my account is a-okay with me.  And if it's just a few dollars, so be it.  That'll pay a month or so of my bank fees.  Plus, I get to say to myself that I Won Against Facebook.  Suck it, Zuckerberg!

Monetarily yours,
