Behka’s Enquiring Minds Recap: Week of September 22 [OPINION]
Every day I put up a new survey for our Enquiring Minds question. I'm always trying to think of new topics to get your brain working, and we can interact a little bit together! There's no way I could go through and discuss every comment and answer that I get, but I can pick out a few here and there and we can mull it over. On Monday, I asked you guys about Unidentified Flying Objects. Or, you know, UFOs. Aliens, you know! Do you believe in aliens? What would you do if you met an alien?
I'm not sure what I really think of UFOS, I mean I guess there could be life in other forms on other planets, but I don't believe what hollywood has made it out to be.
That's one thing I can say for sure - whatever it is, it's not Will Smith punching someone in the face.
Yes, I believe. What would I say? "Holy S**t!"
HA! Well, hey, at least you're honest!
Hell yes, we are not the original inhabitants of this planet. I have seen a light in the night sky take a hard angle turn that is not humanly possible. Friend or foe?
Hmmm, I would hope they'd be friendly, but you can't know, can you? OR CAN YOU?!!
I don't particularly believe in UFO's or space aliens. Most everything has an explanation but it's fun to imagine!
Yeah, you've definitely got a point there. Even if we do get the answer someday, I'm sure it'll never live up to what we pictured in our minds.
On Tuesday I asked you guys about a rather unsettling thing that's been happening for a few years now in the modern workplace - bullying. It's not just a kid's issue, it really affects adults, too. So I wanted to ask you, have you seen something like bullying in your workplace? Have you ever been affected by it? What happened?
Yes and No, I've seen others being bullied, but can't do anything about it because the person/persons doing the bullying is the upper management group. that's just a bad situation all the way around.
That can be pretty hard, to feel like you can't help. But at the same time, you can't fight other people's fights for them.
Yes I have, when I was younger. It made me work harder and pay attention to what needs done. I teach the kids that come to work around me the same way I learned to work. If they can't handle it, they can go down the road. Life's hard and tough - if you're doing your job the way it needs to be done and put your all into it....stop worrying about what some else is not doing. People normally won't mess with you.
I can understand how it can be hard to break habits - if you were trained that way, you teach that way. As long as it's just tough love, you know, "I'm being hard on you to make you better" and not just "I'm insulting you because I'm the boss" than I think I'm okay with that. Not that you need my permission to do what you do, but you know what I mean.
I'm not sure it was full blown bullying, but there was a group of three girls that thought they ran the office and told everyone what to do and how to do it. I put up with it for a little while, but then had to speak my mind when they tried to get me to change a report I knew wasn't supposed to be changed. I refused and they didn't bother me much any more. Those kind usually back off when confronted.
It might not have been deliberate, but that sounds like a pack mentality of bullying to me. You know, use the group to get what you want. But I'm glad to hear you stuck up for yourself!
Yes, It ended up I finally had enough and walked out.
Good for you.
On Wednesday, I asked you guys what your favorite board games to play are.
Suprisingly enough, most of you went with the classics: Monopoly, The Game of Life, and Checkers.
Monopoly, it's a blood sport in our house.
There is something about that game that just makes you get harsh, huh? But for every few answers that said something like Monopoly or Checkers, there was one that stood out.
Axis & Allies. And I still play D&D.
I should introduce you to boyfriendo, he LOVES all those games. But then, I know it's not like he's the only one, but still. And then there's always the professional.
Castle Panic, Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, King of Tokyo, Spurs, Donkey, Love Letter, Last Night On Earth, Alhambra, Zombie Dice, Eldritch Horror, Bohnanza, Munchkin, Tsuro, Bang.....and many many others. I love the interaction with the other players.
That's a great point, as to why we play games in the first place. It's about being together and having a good time.
Then on Thursday, I asked Halloween Candy - what's the worst, most disgusting candy you've had in the Halloween season?
Hard candy. Give me chocolate candy :-)
I always thought that was strange, when people would give you peppermints or something. I guess I just associate peppermints and Werthers, you know, things like that with sitting in church on Sunday.........not really Halloween "special occasion" candy.
Peeps
OKAY, here's yet another that I do not really associate with Halloween. People give those out? I thought those were pretty much Easter only. So either people save them and give them out, or they're giving you the leftovers. Either way, too sweet for me.
Please no peanut butter, I'm allergic :(
Oh no! I guess I don't think about these things as much as I should, but I do wonder how kids who have severe peanut allergies like that do their Trick or Treating. Must be a long night for the parents.
Apples with razors in them!
Oh hardy har har. I've never seen or heard of that happening around here. Did people EVER really do that, by the way? I always thought it was one of those apocryphal stories that they told you to keep you in line. I kind of doubt it's true, but maybe I'm wrong.
Of course, some of you were plain and straightforward:
Peanut things in the black and orange wrappers Yuck !!!!
Those Orange Hard Marshmallow Circus Peanut things...
black wrapped caramel candies
I think we've all learned something here. Don't buy those icky candies this year!!
Anyway, that's it for this week's Enquiring Minds. But, I'll have a bunch of brand new ones next week, so come back and take some more surveys. Make sure you go back and take any of the other surveys you may have missed and you'll get points to win prizes!
Curiously yours,
Behka
